Swales Pelham Happy Tongue
Cheek Pieces: The Swales Pelham is designed to give control specifically for strong horses that are inclined to lean down. It is extremely popular bit with the showing and driving fraternity and is often used in other disciplines for faster work on an experienced horse that is "over enthusiastic". This is the only Pelham that removes poll pressure as the cheeks are attached to the inner rings. That emphasis the action on the curb and exerts more pressure on the jaws, causing the lifting action.
Mouth Pieces: The Happy Tongue is a solid mouth piece. It is curved and ported to give tongue relief. The Happy Tongue would be a good place to start if your horse is:
- Shaking its head
- Sticking out its tongue
- Sucking its tongue back and making an intermittent coughing noise
- Trying to put its tongue over the bit
- Going behind the bit to avoid the contact
- Snatching the reins forward and down
The rider will know immediately if this is the correct bit, as a horse with a sensitive tongue will finally begin to work into, and accept the contact. Changing the cheek pieces would then allow the rider to adjust the level of control.
